Day 3 - March 11
Just Information

   The second level of intimacy is the relationship we have with people with whom we share information. We ask a coworker which team won the ball game, or an older person to tell us about World War II, or we ask directions from a stranger on the street. Even this establishes a kind of relationship, expresses a certain trust.
   We get on this level with God when we want to know more about him. We enjoy learning interesting facts about the life and times of Jesus. Or, going deeper, we study theology for “academic knowledge”—or even to teach or preach to others in an educational way, without necessarily revealing any personal relationship with God on our part or calling for it from others.
   There are certain prayers we say, or can say, that mainly just remind us of what the church teaches— the Profession of Faith at Mass, for example—without any sense at all of declaring our personal choice to believe. Don’t knock this. If we knew more about Jesus, we would love him more. If we knew more about what the church teaches, we would appreciate our religion more.

Stop now and think.  Does this make sense to me?

The truth, the reality of Catholic life today, is that many people do not “experience community” in their parishes—at least, not that “communion in the Holy Spirit,” that mystical experience that we wish for each other at Mass.    What we call “Christian community” is not just a “common unity” of doctrine, morals, and cultural practices. 30 Days to a Vibrant Spirituality Online Retreat Day 14 - March 26 The Nuts and Bolts of Meditation    There is nothing hard about meditating. You just follow the “three R’s”— Remembering, Reflecting, Responding.    Remembering can also be reading. Writings are just recorded memories. The first step in meditating on the gospel is to call to mind, by reading or remembering, something that Jesus said or did. Confront it. Look at it. Don’t let it just go in one ear and out the other. Take it seriously.    Reflecting is the way we take it seriously. We think about what the words mean, and especially about what they mean for us. This isn’t hard.    Responding is the most important step. Everything you do when you meditate is meant to lead you to decisions.    You can always find an answer if you think small enough.
