30 Days to a Vibrant Spirituality Online Retreat

Day 23 - April 8
Vulnerability: The Cost of Ministry

Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable is the cost of ministry. It is the same price Jesus paid, who was crucified because he expressed himself, and who on the cross went on to give the most passionate expression of love ever given. Are you willing to strip yourself of your shielding reserves and join him? Are you willing to take up the cross of self-expression? Self-revelation? Self-exposure?
We simply don’t experience what is inside of us until we express it. If we “keep our light under a bushel basket,” we not only fail to “give light to all in the house”; we remain in the dark ourselves.
Remember, it is a law of physics that we don’t see objects until they reflect light. And it is a law of spiritual life—unless we are looking directly at God and his truth—that the light of faith itself in our hearts is darkness to us unless and until we see it reflected back from realities on which we shine it.
The same is true of love. I don’t know I love until I experience myself loving somebody. And I don’t experience that until I give love, let it go out from me, express it in words and actions.

Stop now and think.  Does this make sense to me?
How can I respond to what Fr. Knight is saying?
